Kirkstall Abbey is one of the best-preserved medieval Cistercian monasteries in the country. Constructed between 1152 and 1182, many of its buildings still survive virtually intact up to eaves level. It is a particularly good example of early Cistercian architecture, illustrating the transition from the Norman to the Gothic styles. The abbey is situated in an attractive public park.
